Description

During an elective course at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), artist and designer Ryan Novelline created a stunning piece of contemporary art known as The Golden Book Gown. This unique garment was crafted entirely from recycled materials, specifically hundreds of discarded Little Golden Books sourced from the Salvation Army and eBay. Novelline meticulously pieced together the colorful illustrations from these beloved children's books, sewing them with metallic gold thread to form the gown's flowing skirt. The bodice was ingeniously constructed from the foil spines of the books.

The Golden Book Gown quickly gained widespread attention for its innovative use of materials and its striking visual impact. The gown exemplifies how sustainability can be seamlessly integrated into high fashion. Publishers Weekly highlighted the gown as a testament to the richness and creativity that green fashion can offer, while Ecouterre named it the "most creative" fashion design of 2011. The Golden Book Gown not only showcases Novelline's artistic talent but also serves as an inspiring example of how recycled materials can be transformed into something both beautiful and meaningful, reinforcing the potential of sustainable fashion to captivate and inspire.
